SACRAMENTS ARE EFFICACIOUS SIGNS
OF GRACE,
INSTITUTED BY CHRIST,
AND ENTRUSTED TO THE CHURCH,
BY WHICH DIVINE LIFE
IS GIVEN.
"Holy Orders is the sacrament through which the mission entrusted by Christ to his apostles continues to be exercised in the Church until the end of time: thus it is the sacrament of apostolic ministry."
- Catechism of the Catholic Church 1536
The Sacrament of Holy Orders is experienced in three degrees: Ordination to the diaconate, the priesthood, and the episcopacy (the bishops, as successors of the apostles.)
In the Sacrament of Holy Orders, or Ordination, the priest being ordained vows to lead other Catholics by bringing them the sacraments (especially the Eucharist), by proclaiming the Gospel, and by providing other means to holiness.
"The role of permanent diaconate is one of service: "To assist the bishop and priests in the celebration of the divine mysteries, above all the Eucharist, in the distribution of Holy Communion, in assisting at and blessing marriages, in the proclamation of the Gospel and preaching, in presiding over funerals and in dedicating themselves to the various ministries of charity." Catechism of the Catholic Church 1570
